DOUBLE CHECK
Merchant shipping

With six departures a day, operations at Stena Line are tightly scheduled. With one departure every four hours, rest periods are short. That's precisely when it's important to stay alert and keep each other on their toes. "Make sure people check on each other. You work as a team, so it's important to look out for each other. That's the most important thing."

“Our goal is to get everyone alive to the next port

Anything can happen at sea: appendicitis, injuries, pneumonia or falls. Every week on duty, there is at least one evacuation. Fortunately, seafarers worldwide can count on the Radio Medical Service.

Working at sea involves risks, especially due to the weather and heavy equipment. Unfortunately, not everyone can be easily evacuated in the middle of the sea. "The risk of injury from heavy equipment and bad weather will always remain. Not everyone can be evacuated. In that case, we advise the ship to set course for the nearest port. Our aim is to get everyone alive to the next port."

On board, safety isn't a matter of luck — it's a matter of checking, and then checking again. A second look, a second measurement, a second person. It's those double checks that make the difference between routine and risk.

When measuring enclosed spaces, we don't measure once, we measure twice. "I've been doing this job for fifteen years and it's been going well for fifteen years because of double-checking."
